The Istituto Elettrotecnico Nazionale Galileo Ferraris (IEN) is a public research institution, operating under the authority of the Italian Ministry of University and Scientific and Technological Research.

The research lines that, keeping the pace with the rapid progress in science and technology, have been developed and solidly assessed since its foundation can be broadly assigned to the areas of Metrology, Materials Physics and Technology, and Innovation Technologies.

Besides its basic research activity, IEN performs important duties in the metrological field, where it operates as a primary Institute, in the framework of SNT, the National Calibration Service, recently established through a national law. In addition, it carries out technical certification on standards, materials, equipment and devices for specific applications.

IEN systematically co-operates with national and foreign scientific institutions, represents Italy, for the appropriate measuring units, within the international metrological bodies, participates in co-ordinated international research projects, and contributes, in co-operation with Universitą and Politecnico di Torino, to doctoral and post-doctoral training.

The scientific areas covered by IEN concern:
  • Metrology, regarding time and frequency, electromagnetic, photometric and acoustic quantities. Specifically, IEN carries out studies and researches oriented to the realization of the primary standards of the SI measurement units and to the determination of fundamental physical constants; compares at international level the realized standards; maintains and makes available these standards for the dissemination of the SI units; studies and develops new reference standards and new measurement techniques;

  • Materials Physics and Technology, with the study of magnetic materials, traditional and high-Tc superconductors and thin film semiconductors, the development of techniques for the production of new materials and devices and their characterization, with particular reference to the magnetic, electrical, photometric, radiometric and acoustic properties;

  • Innovation Technologies, with investigations on components of distribution and utilization plants of electrical energy, on breaking and protective devices and utilization apparatus, aiming at improving their characteristics, also in terms of operation, reliability and safety; the artificial vision, with the development of techniques for automatic image understanding; electromagnetic compatibility of electrical and electronic apparatus.
